I Wanna Be Like Mike

I know I always give Alex Ford a hard time for his utter dislike of Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest man ever to play the game of basketball. And while I disagree wholeheartedly with Mr. Ford on his choice of basketball legends, at least I have Alex Liollio to back me up. See, I’ve known Liollio is a fan of Jordan for a long time. Long before he met the likes of Alex Ford.

Freshman year at Clemson University was probably pretty typical for a first year college experience at at major state University. Video games on the weekdays (Midnight Halo to be exact), Tiger football on the weekends, four hours of sleep or less, lots of parties, and certainly dorm room pranks just about every other day. As many as there were, (grits in the shoes, frozen boxers, trashcans full of water leaned up against the dorm room doors) it wasn’t a prank that Liollio fell for but a moment of very poor judgment.

See, there was a guy on our floor who used to give $1 haircuts. Pretty basic obviously, but if you wanted a quick trim Trais Yates was the guy to see. I had frequented the Barber of Byrnes several time and been very satisfied with his work. He came highly recommended. Somehow word got around to Liollio, who decided it might be time to cut his hair. Thing was, he didn’t JUST let Yates cut it, but gave THREE of us others access to those beautiful locks. It’s a good thing we were all at Clemson University, because after that day, Scott Hartley, Stuart Day and Dan Barnes were definitely banned from Barber’s college for life.

What you see below is the result of a truly bad decision by Alex Liollio:

As I recall, he shaved his head the very next day. I was pretty dissapointed that more of the world didn’t get to see such a great tribute to MJ, but any guy who can pull off racing stripes, orange hair coloring, and a shaved #23 in the back of his head is definitely a guy I want to associate myself with. Happy Birthday Alex!

Body Pillow

I remember the first time I met Liollio, he past out at my apartment and spent the night straddling my body pillow. I’m so poor I sadly still have that body pillow.

I don’t think the stains are from Liollio…

The Turtle Dance (Why you should never challenge Liollio to a dance-off)

It was a late night in Peru (ok, it was only 10pm but it felt way later) and we had all drank one too many Pisco Sours. We were at our hostel not quite ready for bed when Emily, Graham, Liollio and I began to discuss all the awesome dance moves we knew how to do. As you know, when discussing dance moves you cannot just describe them. You have to demonstrate.

We started with the easy ones everyone knew: The MC Hammer, The Roger Rabbit, Cabbage Patch, The Butterfly… each one more intricate and impressive than the previous.

Then Alex says, “Oh yeah, well do you know… The Turtle?”

Emily, Graham and I looked at each other in confusion, “The what!?”

Alex hesitated to demonstrate. For some reason, he thought we already knew about this dance made infamous during his time at Clemson (I think). After much begging, he finally agreed to a one time performance.

Lucky for you all, I was able to sneak a couple shots of “The Turtle” in action. (If you move your eyes back and forth really quickly, you can get the effect—stupid wordpress won’t take animated gifs.)

Liolliord

Sometimes people come up to you looking like Jesus, and when someone comes up to you and embraces you, and you don’t think you know them, and they know your name, sometimes you really think its Jesus.

Why Alex is Jesus

1. He had the beard and the long hair.
2. Twelve guys follow him around all the time.
3. He can turn water into wine.
4. He’s always there to listen even if its hours of babble.
5. He brought that one guy back from the dead that one time.
6. He hangs out with drunks and prostitutes.
7. Sometimes he rides into town on a donkey.
8. He tells stories that sometimes don’t make sense to most people until you think about it for a while.
9. He can make a lot of food out of not that much.
10. He draws a pretty big crowd.

Okay I first met Alex at a thanksgiving dinner and then a few weeks later at midnight basketball (through Intervarsity Christian Fellowship). But my fondest memory and the beginning of our friendship began months later. I was in downtown Raleigh at First Friday with some friends when this guy yelled my name, came up to me and gave me a huge hug. It took me a minute to realize it was Alex because he looked so much like Jesus. Alex became a great friend since that day—always willing to listen to me vent, always encouraging and always kept me laughing. Thanks for being there. Have a great Birthday!

P.S. Are you Jesus?

The Maturation of Alex Liollio

In the beginning Alex Liollio was just a young boy. Girls still had coodies and life was innocent…..

Then along came Middle School and things started happening. Unfortunately Liollio was a late bloomer….

A real late bloomer…

Of course, all things change. Luckily for Liollio, college was just around the corner and there were thousand to choose from….

Luckily he made the right decision and chose these…..

Over these….

And wrapped up this….

So he didn’t get any of these or these….

Rumor has it though, he does have a nasty case of these….

Not to mention these and these….

You definitely don’t want to have either of those!….

Weddings & Nipples

Once upon a time there was an outgoing Greek man with a cast on his leg. And thus our story begins…

So when Ford and I were going to Charleston for Tommy V’s wedding last October, we each needed a date – and a place to stay. Who better to fill both of these positions for us than Mr. Alex Liollio? Perfect date, perfect place to stay. I had many many highlights over the course of my weekend in Charleston. The wedding was fantastic – in the old dungeon/jail in downtown Charleston… although the cells in the basement were a bit creepy.

Meeting the Liollios was definitely way up there on my favorites. I remember Liollio’s dad making some of the most amazing food, and the hospitality of your family in general was overwhelming. Then we spent an afternoon out on the boat (with his awesome lil bro Zac of course) touring the channels of Charleston, seeing the suspension bridge – and tubing!! Probably the best thing was getting to meet his grandparents – my first introduction into the world of 100% Greek 100% of the time. They were lovely.

But my Liollio moment came on the boat. We were cruising around near downtown and were about to pass the Battery – the place where all the tourists are overlooking the water. And as we go by – what do Ford and Liollio decide they should do? Bare their nipples and scream like rednecks at the top of their lungs. Fantastic. And if I remember correctly we actually went by for a 2nd round of “Show Your Nipples to the Tourists”.

You’re a blast, Liollio. Happy Birthday.

But if you don’t know these shirts, then you don’t know Liollio.

 Renaissance man…

We all know Alex the artist. I remember watching him throughout middle and high school in admiration. But School of the Arts was a great place to discover new talents. Alex demonstrated this by literally becoming the definitive role of the jester in art smart. Until then I had no idea that Alex would become a method actor, the only problem being that he has not had another role and he’s still acting as the jester today. Aside from thespian, Alex engaged himself in music.

From a drummer, with or without drums (just give him a good counter top and he will blow you away with wipeout), to singer and rapper. Many a day Alex and I would take on anyone with enough courage in rap battles. Alex spits hot fire likely from the volcanoes of Greece herself. Alex is also an accomplished break dancer and can light up any stage with the Latino favorites Salsa and the Merengue (as I watched him dance with my aunt form Puerto Rico). He is also quite the linguist. As all of you know, he speaks English, but did you know that he speaks Greek? You probably do, but did you know that he speaks CHC? Only two people in the world can speak that language, I’m one, and Alex is the other. That’s right, a secret code language.

A man of many names…

For everyone who is an old, new or recent friend of Alex, you know that we have many nicknames for this guy. I have always wondered why he never seems to have a nickname that is a real word. There are a variety of nicknames that are ever evolving and becoming more complex and ridiculous such as just plain Bilbo, Boobers, liolliollio, and all the varieties etc… But almost nothing that can be fixed by a spell check. I think I have found the answer. Alex is such a complex and amazing individual that no one nickname fits. Not only that, but we have to constantly change his nickname as we discover new and exciting aspects of the Liollio. Even more interesting is that though he has moved away from his original home where these nicknames started, they seem to have begun again with out even realizing it, demonstrating that it is truly Alex who personifies these wild and outlandish nicknames.

The Gift of Giving…

It’s been over 10 years now since I first came across the Liollio and I have discovered that Alex is kinda like Santa clause. He is very giving. But instead of giving a black board, chutes and ladders or tricycles and puppies, Alex gives people stories. He does this in two ways. One, he tells stories, and two, sometimes people just witness weird things that happen to Alex. I’m mostly the latter, and Alex has been very generous. Very generous!

You all know Alex now, but imagine Alex with raging horomones. Yes, puberty was a wonderful chapter in the Liollio’s life! So many great memories! I remember us walking through the mall at “mack speed”; you know, like mack daddy? (the pace that was ideal for getting the attention of girls), taking pictures of each other at the Columbia Zoo where there just ‘happened’ to be beautiful girls standing behind us. Alex’s first attempt of growing a beard (which as we all know is magnificent now) and his mom saying that “it was nice that he grew some friends, now they just need to hold hands to look thicker.”  Lets see…chess during recess, soccer, that wild yoyo phase, fingers to the face, gorgeous clouds, and that base ball swing.

Alex loves baseball. He loved it so much that when we were in line at the fair he would practice his swing with an invisible bat. It was at the fair that we went on the ring of fire. We bragged about the feat we had accomplished while walking around the fair grounds and understanding that what we had just done…was…amazing. The most exciting part was being there without parental supervision, I mean…we were men. After about 20 minutes of walking we were laughing and cutting up when Alex suddenly stops in mid stride, stares into space as if visualizing a moment in time that he had just stumbled upon. It was like he had a time machine in his brain that took him back and freeze framed a single moment. And as quickly as this stare happened, Alex darted off into a sea of fair goers. We later found Alex clutching his wallet that had fallen during the ring of fire ride. I can only imagine what he had to do to find and retrieve that thing.

Going to Florida…

Our first trip to Florida was with School of the Arts for a performing arts festival. There are two things that really stick out in my mind. Here is a little background…Almost the entire school went. The students performed in different theme parks. Each group had a different time to perform, and when you were done, you could enjoy the park. Simple enough, or was it? Through a chain of events, Alex was left at the hotel and did not get to perform. In addition, we had to bring a change of clothes to the park so we did not have to stay in a tuxedo. It was fate that Alex would bring his change, but not his tennis shoes. That’s right; he walked in his shiny black shoes all day with white socks, khaki shorts and a t-shirt. But we still had a blast.

Me and Alex took our first road trip to Florida after graduating high school. Nothing too embarrassing here, but it was a great time and we had a lot of fun. We drove down in his white Jeep Cherokee and stayed with my aunt and uncle in Middleburg Florida, just outside of Jacksonville. This is where we learned Salsa and Merengue. Alex also serenaded my aunt and uncle and his sister from Puerto Rico with Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind as I accompanied him on guitar.

Our next trip down was to Daytona Beach where we stayed for a week. CRAZY good times. Lots and lots of great stories! We met a lot of interesting people and took advantage of our ocean front hotel. We made the trip with Robert Silverstein and Bobby Thompson. We invented the movie game for the ride up, and it made the trip seem like it took 30 minutes.

A great guy…

The stories I have shared have really just scratched the surface of what is in my heart. I could never ask for a better friend. He has always stood up for me, been there when others could not be found, and truly helped me to become a better person. We’ve been through a lot together and I feel like he is truly my life long friend. Though are lives have taken separate paths, we always keep in touch. We forged a bond long ago that will always be. Alex is a great guy and I wish him the happiest of birthdays.
